White Bear Lake Library

Remodeled and Expanded Downtown County Library

Construction of the remodeled and expanded White Bear Lake Library was completed in 2015. As part of the Ramsey County Library system, this project originated from the County’s 2008-2018 Facilities Master Plan and subsequent Feasibility Study in 2013. BTR authored the feasibility study and was then selected to design this important project for the community of White Bear Lake. The project consisted of partial demolition of the existing building, remodeling of approximately 9,000 SF, and an addition of approximately 7,400 SF. The building occupies a picturesque corner at the edge of downtown, only blocks from the lake. The design seeks to maintain the small-town character of the community, while providing an updated image of a twenty-first century library. Elements of the programming and design include: an open, flexible layout; a single point of entry to improve efficiency and increase security; large windows to provide natural light and community connection; day-lighting tubes within the existing building footprint to increase natural light; and multiple study/conference room configurations to accommodate a variety of uses.
